- There is no such thing as a perfect family.

Sorry about crap quality, I did this in like 2.5 seconds after seeing this video: benditlikekorra.tumblr.com/pos…

I don't own Avatar tla/LoK, only my art.

I was so sad when I saw that episode but it makes sense and I'm happy that Mike and Bryan didn't make Aang and Katara have the perfect family, so that was good.

Wow,that sentence 'There is no such thing as a perfect family' it blew my mind. How you always find the right senctence to go with the picture, just one small sentence
But honestly I never really liked the fact that Aang was such a bad father.I don't mean bad,I mean he had to reive a whole culture but I don't think that he just ignored his other children.I mean that's Aang we're talking about,he would have found a way =)

Cheers :3

But yes, I don't think he was a 'bad' father. But I think the whole Kataang family would have suffered under the pressure of Aang needing to restore his culture and also be the avatar. Probably not outwardly, but from the way Kya, Bumi, and Tenzin act in LoK, it's clear that there was certainly some emotional/psychological 'mishaps' during their youth. I would never imagine Aang or Katara doing those things intentionally though, it's just a matter of circumstance.

i think it's only natural for him to show more affection to his airbender child because they're the last two on earth

I can not see aang to be a bad father, I just...can't imagine the boy who cares about everything turning into that, they made it seem like he doesn't care about bumi and kya at all and that makes me really sad :( (Sad).

I feel that they didn't make Aang a 'bad' father so much as a realistic one. But yes, it's still sad :(

it may be realistic but it's still 'bad' and I just don't see that happening to aang, I understand if they whanne make him realistic like in atla (he makes mistakes), but now they didn't make him realistic in lok because of the favoritism, i can not see it happening to aang that's al i meant:( (Sad)

Fair enough if that's what you feel, I do think it is a sad thing to watch. But I mean I can see how it would happen, what with Aang being the last Airbender and his first two children being non-Airbenders, I can imagine the incredible pressure and worry he must have felt about not having produced an Airbending child. I mean, if he didn't have an Airbending kid, then not only would his own race have gone extinct after his death, but the Avatar cycle would have ceased to exist as well. And then Tenzin came along and I can just see the relief that Aang would have had. So I think that is what could have led to a favouritism towards Tenzin.

Hm, I agree with you. I think they probably exaggerated a bit and made Aang seem more worse than he was. But time will tell, maybe we'll learn more about it in the next lok series!

I completely agree. I was very disappointed and even mildly angry with the Korra creators for doing this to Aang.

And it's not just Aang, Katara wouldn't have let it happen either.

(nice artwork. I like the colours and the general idea of the comic :))

Aah, well seeing as he is a non-bender I decided to style his clothing after the nation they were living in. As Republic city is 'technically' in the Earth Kingdom (though I'm sure they separate themselves as an individual state of sorts), I decided to go with Earth inspired dress. xD

Poor Boomi, I can't understand why he isn't a bender if his mother is a waterbender and his dad an air bender ._. He's different even in the clothes! hahahaha But I understand your reason :3

fandom believes that a couple with one bender and one non-bender is actually more likely to have a child that can bend.

That can be truth. But I've read that in the other nations you can't know if your child will be a bender or not, it doesn't care if the couple is formed by two benders, only one or none; but the airbenders are the only ones whose children will always be airbenders too. Beacuse of that all of Tenzin and Pema's children are airbenders.
So I can understand Kya isn't an airbender, but I don't understand why Boomi isn't an at least an airbender. Poor Boomi.. xD

For sure! I've only seen Boomi once (in the last episode of the first season, I'm waiting for the second in Spanish =D ), but in that 2 seconds he looked as awesome as his uncle!
I was only saying that I don't understand that D;

Another school of fandom theorizes that bending is one part genetics, one part spirituality, and one part personality. Perhaps Bumi didn't meet one of the those three.

I know. I don't think he's a 'bad' father per-se, the creators just seem to be portraying the Kataang family as a realistic one that has its problems and isn't at all perfect.

Yeah, I'm sure Aang was a good dad and I'm sure he tried to make it up to Bumi and Kya eventually. They're just fustrated right now and can't remember the good times in their childhoods.

The definition of a good dad is a matter of opinion I suppose. I don't think there's such a thing as a perfect father. But don't believe Aang would have intentionally hurt his children's emotions. Though that's what seems to have happened as a byproduct of him being the Avatar and the last Airbender. But we'll see, I'm sure it'll get better.

Katara looked very... frustrated at best.  Aang will have to sleep with Appa in the barn for several nights when he returns.
Her look to me was "I have two other children, Avatar!!!"  I think Bumi and Kya bonded with Katara who does not want to admit that she was rambunctious when she was younger.  haha.  :-)

Katara: I EVEN WASH ALL THE CLOTHES! Have you ever smelled your dirty socks? Let me tell you! NOT PLEASANT!

Aha she does. I have a feeling that Kya and Bumi were probably very close to their mother.

But I mean I can see where Bryke is coming from with this. Tenzin is the first airbender in the world besides Aang, how could he not want to spend every minute passing on the legacy of their culture to him?

I play the psychological side.  Reading Aang's personality, he would love his wife and children very much.  Monks would have taught him unconditional love.  I agree with the pressure.  Imagine Bumi and Kya growing up with a depressed Father and a happy go lucky Mother. (In the end, Katara had sympathy for Crazy Azula.  I think she might have cried when the 'camera' went off)  How confused where Bumi and Kya when Tenzin was born and Aang became his old self again.  The pressure lifted.  The depression lifted.  Very good to see a real family in the story.

Tenzin and Pema will have a different problem with their children.  In my opinion, their children will be spoiled.  not brats but spoiled since they are the last airbenders.  the new Air Nomads.  Seems like Tenzin and Pema are doing one correct thing... Letting the children go out into the world.  The tour of the air temples was a good idea.  And having Bumi and Kya along as other child caring adults (not sure about Bumi being an adult) will help the childrens growth.  the series after Korra (earth Avatar) I want the 4 airbenders alive and well.  hmm might write myself haha.  :-)

Yeah I see the psychological side going on too.
And I've accepted your head canon there about Aang being almost depressed until Tenzin was born. I feel like this needs a Kataang fanfic. :3

I also think that Tenzin and Pema face a problem with their children. I mean Jinora seems okay, perhaps because she's older she doesn't buy into the material world as much as Ikki does (see the scene where they're fighting over gifts, seems very un-airbender like). But hopefully its just a thing that comes with age. I suppose, having the only airbending kids in the world, as a parent you'd be bound to over-protect them and spoil them a bit. And you're right, I think this journey of the temples is going to really help the kids grow into their culture and its practices. Whilst also exposing them to the other elements of the world through Kya and Bumi.

Yes, I agree. that needs a Kataang fanfic.  I write but problem is I was Zutara and Taang (not the orange drink) hmm.  I do need filler stories in Badlands Wars.  maybe book 2.  stress from planning Republic City and starting a new Air Nomad Nation and stress from a non-bender child. (Bumi looked old to me  so born 108?  Make him 63 in Legend of Korra Book 2. retirement age.  Tenzin 52  Kya 57?  so that could be 11 years without an airbender child.  Maybe, depression.  And I can't wait to see what "The Rift" is about in Dark Horse Comics.

Oh, I saw after episode 3 of book 2 a Jinora who lied about Ikki but told on herself. (seeing her head drop down was sad... got caught) So she picks on Ikki... Interesting. :-)  I write that Jinora doesn't like Ikki always  hanging around her.  Like a normal older sibling wants some space for quiet time.  Yes, I agree, Ikki seems more materialistic.  There is so much 'stuff' now in Republic City.  I see Ikki with a motorcycle or a jetski (fire nation) or both.  the rebel. haha.  :-)  Meelo is the wildcard for me.  could join united forces or end up in prison.  who knows with Sir Farts-a-lot.  Need to have that checked, Meelo.  Not normal.  And the baby.  sheesh.  Might be the greatest airbender of all time.  saving  the world from something in 201 ASC.  Fan art looks as fun as fan fiction.  keep drawing them. :-)

Oh yeah I can't wait for The Rift either! I still haven't got The Search actually, it's on order! xD

I can totally see Ikki with a motorcycle and a fire nation boy on her arm ahaha. She does seem the rebellious type. Though Jinora seems more serious like Tenzin and doesn't always get along with her siblings (just like Tenzin also). And Meelo, well, he's Meelo ahaha. He's certainly my favourite airbending child in any case.

Well if you do write a fic for it be sure to link me! I'd love to read it. And I'll keep up with the fan-art. :D

Aha well it doesn't really need explanation when you think about it.

I mean, can you imagine the pressure Aang and Katara must have felt to have an airbending child? And to have their first two children not be airbenders would have been really hard on Aang I think. So I can see how a situation might arise where Aang would spend more time with Tenzin than his other kids (not intentionally I'm sure).

But that's how family works in real life so I'm glad that the creators aren't making Kataang out to be some perfect family, which wouldn't be possible in reality.

Oh thank you by the way :)
